Cooling System Service and Repairs

Your radiator has the job of taking heat from the engine and moving it to a liquid. Next, that liquid circulates around the engine. Additionally, the liquid is then forced through a series of small fins. Plus, a fan blows outside air across those fins. As a result, the hot liquid gives its heat or “radiates it” to the outside air. Then, it returns to circulate around your engine again.

As you know your engine gets very hot and it gets hot enough to boil water. This is the reason that our car radiator will be filled with a mixture of coolant and water. The coolant which is also known as antifreeze raises the boiling point of the water and that is what keeps it all from boiling away. Up north antifreeze has a second purpose that we don’t concern ourselves with here in Hollywood Florida.

Many things can happen with the radiator which can lead to problems. Some of these problems may be fixed at home and others will require professional diagnosis.

There is a fan blowing air across the cooling fins and when that belt breaks then the pump stops working which circulates the coolant around the engine. This will cause a warning light to come on in the car indicating that the engine is overheating. If your engine remains overheated and you continue to drive serious damage will be the result.

If you see steam coming out of your car it may be that a hose broke and now your coolant is spraying around on the outside of the engine and boiling away. This is a reason to stop your car and get it towed to our facility.
